Rochester Folk Art Guild Fire -
Upper Hill Rd
- January 11th 2009
The Middlesex Fire Department received
a report of a workshop fire at the Rochester Folk Art Guild Complex. Middlesex
Engine 16,
PT17,
PT46,
M23
and Car 8-00 went enroute and immediately called for a additional tanker from Rushville
and standby coverage from Naples.
Car 8-00 arrived on scene to find a 2 story
wood frame workshop with a large attached barn area. There was heavy smoke
condition and a fire in the south wall of the workshop with exposure to the
underside of the 2nd story floor.
E16 pulled an 1 3/4" handline in an
offensive operation to knock down visible fire. A chain saw was used to open
wall spaces and the area of fire was overhauled and ventilated.
After the fire was knocked down, Rushville
was diverted to standby coverage at the Middlesex station and Naples was
released.
Firefighters checked the 2nd story
area for extension.
A quick response by the fire department and use of handled fire extinguishers, to
darken down the fire, by Folk Art Guild members, limited fire damage.
Fire damage was confined to the
immediate area of fire origin with some extension to the underside of the
2nd story floor structure. There was also extensive heat damage to exposed
electrical wiring.
Determination of the exact cause and
origin of the fire was turned over to the Yates County Fire Investigation
Team.
